Svetlana Turbanist, reproductive physician at ISIDA clinic, took part in the ESHRE Congress
In July 2017, the annual, 33rd, Congress of reproductive and embryology specialists ESHRE was held in Geneva. More than 10 thousand reproductologists and embryologists from all European countries attended Congress, as well as from the USA, Australia, India, China, Japan and other countries of the world.
Among the leading experts in the world, there were doctors from ISIDA clinic: Kremenska Julia Valerievna, biologist, embryologist, molecular geneticist; Palamarchuk Alina Nikolaevna, doctor obstetrician-gynecologist, reproductologist; Turbanist Svetlana Viktorovna, reproductive physician.
About how the work of the Congress ESHRE passed, says Turbanist Svetlana Viktorovna, reproductive health doctor.
Svetlana Viktorovna, what are the goals of the ESHRE Congress?
The ESHRE Congress is held annually, usually in one of the European countries. However, the participants of this Congress are scientists and practicing doctors not only from Europe, but also from the USA, Australia, India, China, Japan and other countries and continents of the world. The ESHRE Congress is a unique and for many of its participants a long-awaited opportunity to reconcile personal discoveries and achievements with the discoveries of colleagues from other countries of the world.
Reproductologists and embryologists from all over the world have one task – to overcome infertility, to promote the birth of healthy children. Nevertheless, in each clinic, which is specialized in the treatment of infertility, there may be nuances in the work, their own results. To verify them, combine them, analyze them and come to a common opinion that will help realize a common goal for everybody – this is the "maximum goal" of events such as the ESHRE Congress.
In addition, each of the participants in the congress has a professional question, specialist goes with to similar events and the answer to which he usually takes to his native clinic.
With what professional question did you personally go to ESHRE?
Personally, I was interested so much, how other clinics solve the problem of the risk of ovarian hyperstimulation in ART programs; everything related to the cryopreservation of embryos is very important, as well as the treatment of infertility in general. All this is our daily work, which result is very important to compare with the results of colleagues from other countries.
Also at the congress was discussed a very promising topic about the first successfully conducted attempts to transfer pronuclei. Perhaps, the future of reproductology lies behind this
Explain, please, what do you mean.
The pronuclear transfer of nuclei is the fertilization of female egg with male spermatozoa, followed by the transfer of pronuclei into the donor egg. This is called "a child from three parents". This technique may be the only chance for age patients: in such cases, the fertilized egg from the "age" patient may not have enough energy to successfully implant into the uterine lining of the uterus and begins to develop, getting everything necessary for this already from the body of the mother.
Transferring pronuclei into a younger and therefore more viable donor egg could be a solution to this problem. However, by using this technique, there are questions both medical and ethical issues. As I said, it will be a child "from three parents", because egg donors also participate in the genetic recruitment of this embryo, because the mitochondria of the donor egg also contain DNA.
Is this technique one of the newest in the world of reproductive medicine?
Yes, at the ESHRE Congress, the results of the first successful attempts of nuclear transfer were announced. And yet it is unclear what kind of gene pool the child can contain, how big is the risk of inheritance of any diseases. In fact, at the ESHRE Congress, in connection with the pronuclear transfer, the issue of getting pregnant at any cost was discussed. Moreover, there is no certainty that it is worth doing so far. Now the first scientific experiments are underway, and it is important for us to understand whether it is worth including in the number of clinics participating in these developments. The level of our work, the level of specialists allow us to do this. But both for the introduction of new techniques into practice, and for refusing this, we need facts, a clear argument. You can get them in the course of a comprehensive, one might say, international discussion at events like the ESHRE Congress.
By the way, it was very pleasant to feel once again that, appearing as an employee of ISIDA clinic gives you automatically falling into the number of specialists whose dialogue with even the most famous reproductors of the world leads on equal terms, with respect to professionalism and real results. It's very nice!
